Egypt has introduced new laws and larger more severe fines into the traffic laws book..
1. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol will lead to hefty fines and jail time. Tests for using either of the above will be administered on location.
2. A fine of 100Le-300Le for not wearing a seatbelt or for using a cell phone while driving.
3. A fine of 1,000 Le - 3,000 Le for driving in the wrong lane or against the flow of traffic.
4. Suspension of one's driving license for a minimum of one month for parking in a No Parking Zone.
5. Imprisonment for a maximum of six months and a fine of 200Le - 1,000Le for removing a tire clutch placed by the traffic police.
6. Imprisonment for six months and a fine of a minimum of 300 Le for violation of public protocol inside a car.
7. Suspension of one's driving license for no less than six months for driving at night without headlights.
8. Suspension of one's driving license for one month for driving without a first aid kit or reflective triangle.
9. Cab drivers refusing to take on passengers, asking for more than the due fare, or allowing more passengers than allowed will face fines between 300 Le and 1,500 Le.
10. Public transportation will pay a fine between 300 Le and 1,500 Le for picking up passengers at non-designated stops.
11. Cab drivers will also have their licenses suspended for a minimum of one month if they are caught driving without a functioning meter.
I think most of these laws are great and very much over due. The traffic system does need some reform to try to handle the problems faced and caused by drivers in Egypt.
I just wonder about the implementation of these laws. I also think that the government needs to make things a bit easier for drivers.
For example, I would never park in a no parking zone if there were places to park in this city. Sometimes there is nowhere to park within a 10 mile radius of where you're going. So, as the Egyptian DMV creates and implements new laws.. I hope they will at the same time give Egyptian drivers the opportunity to abide by these laws.
