Talking to a child...

So, I have a student who is quite naughty. He is the class clown.
He is always talking. He hardly ever uses his chair. He has to be reminded myriad times to do his work.

Well.. I wrote a letter to his parents to ask them to talk to the kid...
The letter says:

Dear Parents,
I am writing to inform you of Mohamed's behaviour in class. He is constantly disrupting the class. He talks at inappropriate times. He is always playing with something. He runs around the class room.
His behaviour makes it difficult for himself and other students to benefit from being in class.
Please speak to him about these issues and the importance of proper behaviour in class.
Thank you,
Nora

and...
This is the reply that I got.....

Miss Nora,
Thank you very much for your time and effort with Mohamed. I spoke with him and he promised me that he will behave himself in class. Please inform me if there are anymore problems with him and his behaviour.

Thank you,
Maha

And this is how the message was delivered.....

Note:
The pictures have been removed for privacy purposes...
The kid had:
a black eye
a hand shaped bruise on one cheek
a bruise inside his ear
a cut under an eye

DUDE.... REMOVE THE FREAKING PICTURES...

On the subject of hitting kids though, I think it is the worst parents could do to get their kids to do something, I mean hitting is not totally prohibited but this is not hitting this is abusing...

yeah...

those bruises are 24 hours old...

they were still there today, 48 hours after the mother spoke to him...

this is beating the shit out of a poor defenseless child....

So, how does it feel to be the reason for the beating of this child? ...okay ...okay.. kidding :)

But seriously? are you sure all of that is because of a letter from a his teacher saying that he's not behaving in class?! Isn't it too extreme!?

Nora said...

Yeah, it wasn't only because of me...
He also didn't finish his math homework for an enrichment program that he is part of....

Umm, yeah I do feel pretty shitty... Talk about guilt trip!

Oh yeah, you suck!!!

And yeah it is a bit extreme! His other is an extremely bitchy person also!!

(shaking head). I would pull the pics. I knew many a parents in Egypt and the UAE who uses the fist to impress upon their children the importance of good behaviour.

Nora said...

Why pull the pics?

I know that there are parents all over the world who use their fists to talk about discipline and so on...
I guess it just hurts more here because I don't see any laws to protect those children.
I do not see anyway of making that child not afraid of going home.
I do not see anyway of making this child less eager to please everyone around him so that he does not get the shit beaten out of him...

I think from a legal perspective, but also for the sake of a child's anonymity.

Nora said...

hehehehhe...

I was thinking that.. but then thought it was quite arrogant of me to think that so many people actually read my blog...
To think that I have enough readers to compromise his anonymity...

Let's Get positive here, Have the child pulled his act together and behaved well ever since his mum "Talked" to him?

If Yes: Mission accomplished
If No: Good to know that Mohamed won't crack under beating; he'd make a good spy.

Let's Get negative, is the child deeply scared? and as a result will take his vengeance on society later and probably will develop - moderate to severe- psychological problems towards parents and authority figures?

If Yes: The child can undergo therapy in this young age.
If No: Mohamed is unbreakable!

Anyways, I think you should report this, Nora

I know...

Fucking evil bitch!!!!

Mo'men,
I think Mohamed is unbreakable... but all too eager to please...
I doubt he would make a good spy.. because a simple..
"Mohamed, please sit down because I know you can behave better than this.. and if you choose to not be as good as you can I will be sad for you" works...
I think that a government could use that against him...

Hmm, report this to whom? Umm, this is Egypt... I do not think it would do any good!!!

I had the comfortable illusion that child beating comes with a certain set of financial/social circumstances, obviously I'm wrong.

On the upside, the kind of child you describe is the exact kind that will know very well how to turn his parents' lives into living hell in a few years.

Now THAT will be fun.

Yeah, I used to have that same misconception... Sadly, I have seen physical, emotional, and sexual abuse prevalent amonst the kids that I teach.. all members of the upper and upper middle classes...

;o(

I haven't seen the pictures they have already been pulled down and I am glad that I haven't, I can't imagine how a parent could inflict such abuse on any child let alone their own.

I agree. The pictures were horrible. I will never understand how a parent can do that. Actually, I will never understand how anyone could hurt an innocent and helpless child...
People suck!
