Yesterday as I was leaving work I got a traffic report from a friend's driver. He said the road was hideous and that it took him an hour and a half to get to the school...
He said that the side going back was much worse!
So, we all decide to take a different route home. We called it a shortcut!
This "shortcut" was 30 km out of our way!
Sadly, this really was a shortcut and we got home faster than we normally do....
Only in Egypt does driving 30 km out of your way still define a shortcut!

sometimes we have to do the same even in the US. I am sure I dont need to remind you, but a 90 minute commute or a "detour" or shortcut that is 16-17 miles long (about 30 KM) is not that uncommon in many metropolitan areas or big cities around the world...
aren't you sick of my posts yet :)
Hmm, damn I love California!
Roads were always beautiful!
Detours were a maximum of one block!!!
Hmm, not sick of your posts yet! I'll let you know when I am!
Nice blog. I will keep reading. Please take the time to visit my blog & HAPPY A NEW YEAR
Thanks for the comment..
Happy New Year to you too!
:o)
Cool post, but don't you love it, don't you love how miraculous things seem in Egypt, I mean a 3o KM shortcut is faster, doesn't that make you love the weirdness that Egypt carries...
Okay I am gonna start talking about my eternal love for Egypt so I better shut up and go wait for my next vacation or mayebe residing there forever...
I never said this but I do like your blog pretty much...
Ciao
GBK,
Yeah, I do love the weirdness of Cairo. Sometimes it drives me crazy.. but I cannot seem to stay away from Egypt for too long...
Thanks for the comment babe!
So, what do you miss most about Cairo/ Egypt?
Well I don't know where to start that is a very tricky question :)
I miss the winters, how i wanna hide under my blankets when it gets awfully cold and yet could not get off the street.
I miss the rush and the crowds, the rush that with zillions of kilometer shortcuts can be dodged.
I miss Cilantro Elmirghani, and Joffreys City Stars, Virgin Mega Stores (Man I miss that one so much), the book section and the mix of tahyees and search for something good to read, that feels so damn good.
I miss elsa7el.
I miss my best friend (That tops all).
I miss how I hate the people when I am there and yet know that I never want my vacation to end because regardless of how dumb and annoying many of them might be, I just love them even when I think I hate them..
I miss it all...
See you just tricked me into writing a post and then you will come around and ask me never to comment again, because my comments are too lengthy for anyone to read :P
See ya,
Cheers
GBK,
Yeah, I guess I did trick you... that is one of my favorite things to do. Trick unsuspecting men into doing what I want!
:o)
The things you mentioned are definitely the cool things that you come to appreciate about Egypt as soon as you leave.
I liked the part about hating the people, but at the same time loving them too! I feel that way about the people here too!!!
:o)
Why do you like Cilantro Merghany? It is my least favorite Cilantro of them all...
Anyway, feel free to leave any size comments you want. I promise I will read them... and I will not ask you to not comment...
:o)
I dunno, I think it is not just Cilantro el Mirghany, I think it is Korba too, but for some reason this one came to be my favorite of them all, I have a seat there that to my luck I always find free when I go there, although this one is quite crowded so you know, it puts me under the illusion I own that seat :D
And thank you for allowing me to post any sized comments.
And well you shouldn't have told me your favorite trick, I love to annoy people, that is my favorite trick so I am a suspecting man now :P
Damn it!!
I hate suspecting men!!!
Well, I hate it more when they leave long comments on my blog!
(Does reverse psychology work on you?)
Well, I guess Cilantro could be cool if you feel that you own it. I still do not like it. I never really liked Cilantro anyway. I like Starbucks and Costa coffee more. I only like to go to Cilantro when i am craving hot chocolate...
Hmm, ok.. I feel myself getting more and more boring...
I have to act busy and not boring now... so I gotta run.. and save the world or something!
Psychology doesn't work, reverse psychology doesn't work :P
And well go save the world, teach some awful kids something, just like I save the world by getting swallowed in the corporate machine helping them in one way or the other boost their wealth...
And you didn't get boring at all...
See ya later,
Cheers
Hey...
My students are not awful!!!
:o(
Not your students, kids in general, I don't know why these days I get the feeling kids and teenagers just perceive the world as a big playstation :P
And hey I did one of my other favorite things, I tricked you into commenting once more...
See now I like doing that too, tricking unsuspecting women into doing what I want, after making sure they don't want that very same thing, that way it is more challenging :P
GBK,
I agree about kids having a skewed vision of life and the world these days!
So, you like tricking unsuspecting women... evil you!!!
:o)
Yeah they do, and yeah I do...
You have met your match :P
oh yeah...
You did not trick me into commenting. I chose to comment.
I am really untrickable!!
:o)
We could all say that when we are being tricked, anyways it was really fun commenting on your blog, I mean I haven't had this much fun making wise ass comments here on blogger in a long time....
You know it is always quite a fun thing to strike a totally weird yet fun conversation with people you never spoke too... And it is more fun when it is on blogger...
Yeah...
Totally weird pointless conversations are one of my favorite past times!
Glad you had fun babe!!! So did I!
Thanks I will make sure I drop by whenever I feel the need for weirdness.
Happy New Year and retroactively Happy Eid.
GBK,
Happy New Year to you too babe!
